Remove the location and other hidden details from a photo

A photo from a phone can carry where it was taken, when, and with which phone. Add a photo to see what is inside it, and get a copy without those details. The picture itself is not redrawn, so it looks exactly the same.

    How it works

    1. Add your photos. What is stored inside each one is listed: location, date, camera and more.
    2. Press Remove the details.
    3. Download the clean copies and share those instead of the originals.

What a photo can give away

When location is switched on for the camera, a phone writes the exact spot, to within a few metres, into every photo. A picture of something you are selling, taken at home, can therefore carry your home address. It also carries the date and time and the model of your phone.

These details are called EXIF data or metadata. They are useful in your own gallery, and worth removing before a photo goes to a stranger, a marketplace, a forum or a public website.

See it before you remove it

The list that appears when you add a photo is read from the file itself, on your device. If it says "No hidden details were found", the photo is already clean, which is common for screenshots and for photos that an app has already shrunk.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is removed?

Everything that is about you, the place or the device: the GPS location, the date and time, the camera or phone model and its serial number, the editing program, author and copyright notes, captions and keywords, comments, the small preview copy of the picture, and any data hidden after the end of the picture, such as the short video of a motion photo.

    Does the picture lose quality?

Not for JPG, PNG and WebP. The file is taken apart and put back together without the details, and the picture data is copied as it is, so every pixel stays the same. HEIC, GIF, BMP and AVIF pictures are saved again as a JPG instead, which the page tells you.

    What is kept?

Two things the picture needs to look right: which way up it is (so a phone photo does not turn sideways), and its colour profile. Neither says anything about you.

Do WhatsApp, Instagram or email remove these details for me?

Some apps remove some of them when they shrink a photo, and some do not: sending a photo as a document or a file, by email, or through a cloud link usually sends the original with everything in it. Cleaning the photo yourself is the only way to be sure.

Does this hide a face, a number plate or an address in the picture?

No. This removes what is stored beside the picture, not what can be seen in it. To cover part of a picture use Redact image.

    Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens inside your browser, on your own device. Your files are never sent to a server, and you can confirm that in your browser's network tab. Close the tab and they're gone.

Is there a file size limit?

Each file can be up to 100 MB, and up to 300 MB in total. Because the work happens on your device, very large files depend on your available memory. A desktop browser handles them best.
